Interview: MJ

by | Feb 3, 2021 | New Artist Interviews | 0 comments

Artist Name: MJ
Latest Release: Y.K.I.N.G. Freestyle

“Female rapper MJ was born in Redondo Beach, Ca but raised in Pensacola, FL. She began her musical journey in 2011, spitting freestyles on Odd Future Wolf Gang tracks. This beginning culminated in the 2014 release of her debut album, "Live Through Me". After relocating to Houston, TX she followed up with a mixtape titled "MEEZUS". The artist is inspired by both the hard hitting style of Southern rap and the smoothness of soul.

Recently she stormed into 2020 with an eccentric EP titled "The Way Things Were". It features a fun array of producers including of Rob the Matrix, DoHenry Beats, Omni, and Veegi. MJ flows and harmonizes on multiple beats arousing feelings ranging from anger to sexy and then fun all in one.

The ambitious project has been four years in the making. Showcasing her knack for uniqueness and being different, MJ is not your ordinary female rapper. She is a determined yet free spirited artist who raps to the beat of her own drum. Drawing from inspirations including Missy Elliot and Kendrick Lamar, she tightens her flow while reflecting on herself and the world around her. Her sound incorporates elements of new school trap and old school funk and rock. Southern rap provides the canvas for these sounds to flourish on.”

Tell us all about this new track of yours!
A lyrical soliloquy paying tribute to the legendary Amy Winehouse. Something new and different for your ears.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Drake. Kendrick Lamar.

Where are you from and what is the music scene like?
I'm currently in Houston, TX. The underground scene here is on it's way up with a different array of artists.

How have your life experiences influenced your music?
Being over controlled, contained, and going through depression had shaped my lyrics and musical output. I bare my soul more in my work.
