Interview: koi

by | Apr 23, 2021 | New Artist Interviews, New Rap Music Artists

Artist Name: koi

Tell us something about you that fans should know:

As an artist, I would describe myself as a motivated individual that finds gratitude from overcoming an obstacle, whether it be in making music or in life, and learning from that to become better.

Where are you from and what’s the music scene like there?

I'm was raised on gospel/orchestral music in a small town named Brighton, Michigan and moved to Phoenix, Arizona at the age of 11. From there, I was introduced to pop music, rap, hip hop, and the most influential, EDM. In the summer of 2016 I went back to my roots in Michigan to check out the Electric Forest music festival 5 hours away in Rothbury where I decided that was what I wanted to do this as a passion.

How have your life experiences influenced your music?

In the first 18 years of my life I seemed to lack purpose in what I was doing. I played sports from the ages of 8-18 and even then it still seemed empty to me. Once I went to Electric Forest it seemed like everything made sense to me. I knew what I wanted to do, regardless of how difficult it may have been to overcome it. During those previous 18 years it seemed like I was a square peg trying to fit into a round hole; things just didn't work out. I was sad, confused, and exhausted. Now, when I make music, I want something that encompasses an emotion. Firstly, I want it ot be happy and joyous, to match the mood I have when I make it. Or, I want someone to get a nasty bass face and head bang, as I imagine I would do when I drop the song at a festival. The beauty of music is feelings being expressed through sound.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

Illenium/Kaivon

Song Title: Ed Sheeran – Afterglow (koi remix)
