Interview: Flaco51

by | Feb 14, 2021 | New Artist Interviews | 0 comments

Artist Name: Flaco51
Latest Release: Sorry Grandma

“I’m an Illinois rapper from the 618. I’m versatile, just listen to the album I just dropped. My style ranges from hard rap, like my song Blowout ft SeanB, to emotional hip hop, like my song Sorry Grandma.”

Tell us all about this new track of yours!
Sorry Grandma stands in the emotional hip hop category, while keeping one foot firmly planted in the more gangster rap category. Sorry Grandma is a song I (Flaco51) wrote as an apology to my abuelita for all the stress and worry my lifestyle and life events have put her through, and it is a shout out to my Grandma and Mother for holding it down and always being there in my life when I needed them.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?
I would love to collaborate with Control Machete. I think his hard Spanish rap and my own style would flow well on a track.

Where are you from and what is the music scene like?
I’m from Southern Illinois not many mainstream rappers are coming out of my area. As far as the live music scene goes, Im more of a studio artist. Despite the lack of recognition 618 rappers get, this is where I’m from and I represent that. My first album that just dropped is titled 618 (fuck the feds).

How have your life experiences influenced your music?
Yeah, drugs and violence is just part of life. I’m a 90s baby. We grew up on GTA as kids and that’s the lifestyle we saw around us that’s what we know. I graduated high school, but I ain’t make it a year before I caught my first case. I spent 3 years in the Federal Prison System. My music is my outlet for dealing with all those fucked up life experiences. I been out for almost as long as I was in now, and I’m tryna focus on my music.

Which character in your favorite movie do you most identify with? Why?
Noodles, Robert DeNiro’s character in Once Upon a Time in America. Noodles was just a kid coming up without a lot of money, doing dumb shit with his friends, who got in a jam and went to the joint at a young age. And from that young criminal lifestyle, to prison life, to coming home I relate. He just chose a different path after that and I chose this music.

Can you give us a sample of Flaco51 music?
